Commentary
Perhaps the coldest start to the day this winter thus far saw agents pen 542 cattle at today’s Scone market with the majority being steer and heifer calves, around 100 yearlings and 70 cows were offered in a market that had mixed trends throughout, with not all buyers present at the rail.
Light steer calves sold to similar rates to last week for the better-bred drafts, although averages eased due to a greater percentage of secondary types being offered. Prices ranged from 420c to 638c/kg to end up 33c/kg cheaper. Over 330kg little change as lot feeders reduced their induction weights and traded between 500c and 598c/kg. Quality remained high throughout the light heifer weaner drafts as they sold to dearer rates of 27c/kg making from 405c to 534c/kg. Medium and heavy weights over 330kg were firm to dearer and sold from 492c to 540c/kg with supplementary fed heifer calves making up to 592c/kg to the local butcher trade.
Lot feeders paid from 476c to 580c/kg for yearling steers over 400kg, same weight and destination for yearling heifers topped at 506c/kg and made up to 570c/kg to process. Lighter 2 score cows all cheaper 200c to 346c/kg, prime 3 and 4 scores over 520kg firm to 6c/kg better off trading between 380c and 405c/kg. Best heavy Bull topped at 392c/kg.
