Commentary
Numbers lifted with paddocks now drying out after last week’s heavy rain. Quality was fair to very good, with some stock grain fed. The usual exporters made it to the sale, and most were keen to make purchases. Domestic processors were at the market, and all were bidding for well finished grain fed yearlings and vealers. Heavy steer and bullocks numbers improved.
It was a good offering of trade cattle. However, vealers numbers declined and domestic buyers were bidding strongly for the top end European veal. Prices ranged for the better finished from 452-545c/kg. Trade steers sold mostly firm to 5c easier with the better finished fetching 485-532c/kg. Trade heifers 400-500kg sold to stronger competition with some feedlot buyers helping push prices higher. The bulk making from 440-475c/kg. There was strong demand for Angus heifers which resulted in price lifting 42c as a result of the improved quality. The bulk of the medium weights sold from 468-502c/kg. Feeder steers ranged from 466-522c/kg.
On the export side heavy steers and bullocks suitable for processors were very good however feedlots dominated buying nearly all the younger well finished steers. Heavy steers purchased by processors sold from 430-530c/kg. Heavy steers destined for feedlots sold between 444-526c/kg. Bullock’s prices improved 12c to average 452c/kg. In the cow sale, quality was quite good and bidding was intense for the better finished types. The bulk of the heavy cows were unchanged, with the well finished types ranging from 390c to 432c/kg. Leaner cows under 520kg and with some cover lifted in value to average 365c/kg. Heavy bulls with shape sold from 422-440c/kg.
