Commentary
Numbers declined and quality improved to the previous sale across trade weight categories. There were some outstanding vealers in the mix and some very good trade cattle 400-500kg. All the usual buyers attended and only a couple of buyers operated in the export run for heavy steers and bullocks. Heavy cattle were limited and quality was fair. Demand lifted from domestic buyers while export processor competition was patchy at times.
It was an excellent offering of vealers and they attracted strong bidding. The better finished selling from 440-490c/kg. Trade steers and heifers were all grass finished and ranged from very good to fair. The steer portion made from 415-475/kg. Trade heifers sold to a small group of processors with quite a few purchased by feedlots, the bulk of the medium selling from 420-453c/kg. Meanwhile, competition and price for feeder types operated around breed. Feeder heifers medium weight 400-500kg made from 391-445c/kg. Feeder steers in the medium weight category sold to solid demand to average 445c/kg. Light weight secondary steers 200-280kg were quite mixed and not as well bred as the previous sale. Prices slipped 53c and ranged from 434-476c/kg.
On the export side heavy steers and bullocks suitable for processors sold to patchy demand with heavy steers easing 7c making from 410-474c/kg. Bullocks bore the brunt of the weaker demand slipping 11c making from 410-465c/kg. In the cow sale, heavy cows were well supplied and most buyers operated solidly. The bulk of the better heavy cows made from 378c to 409c/kg. Leaner cows D3 types under 520kg were mixed selling from 330-370c/kg. The better shaped heavy bulls sold from 388-412c/kg.
