Commentary
At Naracoorte agents yarded 3437 sheep and lambs an increase of 416 head. The yarding comprised 1493 lambs and 1947 sheep. The better quality trade lambs were supplementary fed and overall quality was similar to the previous week. Approximately 225 new season lambs were offered. Most of the regular buying panel was in attendance although not all were fully active. Despite this the market remained firm. Well finished shorn trade lambs averaged between 1000 and 1100c/kg cwt with a pen of shorn lambs topping at $380/head. New season lambs sold to a top of $280 and averaged between 1100 and 1230 c/kg cwt.
Feeder and restocker competition was very subdued. Light lambs12 to 16kg sold from $85 to $188/head, while lambs weighing 18 to 22 kg made $190 to $264/head. Lambs in the 22 to 26kg range sold from $245 to $286/head. Merino lambs were limited in supply and made between $170 and $254/head. Hoggets reached a top of $205/head
.
It was a good quality yarding of trade sheep with a mix of crossbred and Merino sheep mainly heavy and medium weights. Not all buyers were present or active and the market was generally slightly softer by $5 to $10/head. Mutton prices ranged between 620 and 730c/kg cwt.
Heavy crossbred ewes sold to $248/head. Merino wethers reached $220 and Merino ewes made up to $237/head. Terminal rams sold to $170 while Merino rams reached $100/head.
