At Mortlake agents yarded 2,937 head a decrease of 301 on the previous market. Quality was similar across most categories with more weight evident in the grown steer and bullock offering. Trade cattle however were not quite as good as the previous sale with a noticeable tail of dairy and crossbred types. The cow offering comprised 44% beef cows with the balance being dairy bred. All regular buyers were in attendance and most were active on the yarding of 481 bullocks along with 921 trade cattle,1478 cows and 57 grown bulls.
The market remained strong at the top end but once off the best cattle prices eased by 10–15 c/kg and more in places. Manufacturing steers particularly dairy breeds fell 10–20c/kg. Most heavy beef cows were 20c/kg cheaper with medium weights and lighter dairy cows losing up to 30c/kg. Heavy grown bulls slipped 20–25c/kg while dairy types generally remained firm.
Bullocks sold to a top of 496c/kg. Better quality trade cattle ranged from 480–530c/kg. Heavy beef cows made 370–408c/kg while medium weights sold from 335–376c/kg. Dairy cows with better cover ranged from 335–370c/kg with beef cows returning to the paddock making up to 414c/kg. Dairy bred manufacturing steers reached 410c/kg and crossbred steers sold to 470c/kg. Grown heifers ranged from 450–472c/kg and grown steers reached a top of 492c/kg.
