Commentary

At Mortlake agents yarded 1,666 head an increase of 331 on last week’s offering. Overall the quality was similar across most sections including cows. There was a larger tail of dairy and crossbred cattle present in the trade section. The bullock and grown steer offering displayed a good finish with more weight overall. The cow offering comprised 62% beef cows, with the balance being dairy-bred. All regular buyers were in attendance for the yarding of 210 bullocks, 553 trade cattle, 786 cows, and 117 grown bulls. The market generally remained firm to slightly dearer by up to 10c/kg in places for bullocks and grown steers while trade cattle remained firm. There was continued strong demand for well-bred feeder steers and heifers. Heavy beef cows remained firm however, better medium weights and dairy cows were softer by 5 to 8c/kg in places. Heavy grown bulls generally remained firm to slightly softer in isolated areas.

Bullocks sold to a top of 493c/kg while better quality trade cattle ranged from 480c to 520c/kg. Heavy beef cows made between 410c and 436c/kg with medium weights selling from 360c to 400c/kg. Dairy cows particularly those with better coverage ranged from 370c to 415c/kg, and cows returning to the paddock made around 350c/kg. Manufacturing steers reached 460c/kg. Grown heifers ranged from 410c to 485c/kg and grown steers sold to a top of 492c/kg. Grown bulls reached up to 472c/kg.
