Commentary

The numbers almost halved in what was best described as a very mixed penning. Cows were well supplied as were grown steers in condition ideal to feed on. There was also a good supply of young cattle. The condition of the offering overall was on the plainer side. There was a reduced field of buyers in attendance.

There were varying trends through the young cattle with restocker competition for weaner steers strong. This resulted in firm to dearer trends however the cattle carried less weight than the previous sale. The heifer portion sold to cheaper trends. Medium and heavy weight yearling steers sold to a slightly dearer trend with some quality related price change. The medium and heavy weight yearling heifers to feed followed a similar trend. The plainer quality young cattle in all categories struggled to attract much buyer competition.

Grown steers to feed sold to dearer trends when taking age and dentition into account. Breed was also a factor while age was no barrier with some carrying a full mouth. There were insufficient well finished grown cattle to quote. Processor demand for cows continued to slide with market trends cheaper throughout. The well finished heavy weights were down as much as 16c to 18c/kg. There was a good restocker order in place that helped the plainer condition cows.
