Commentary
Numbers were back by 400 compared to the previous weeks store sale with a yarding of 1600. It was a much better quality yarding with a better selection of good quality weaners along with a few pens of cows and calves and cows. With the winter conditions holding growth back there was only a small field of buyers who were very selective. The very best of the good quality steer weaners were close to firm most of the steer and heifer weaners though were up to $100/head cheaper.
The steer weaners under 200kg sold from $200 for very light Angus calves to $1030 for Angus calves in fresh condition. Most of the better calves averaged between 380c and 425c/kg lwt. The heavier steer weaners over 200kg sold from $720 for Charolais s to $1270 for top quality Angus steers in good condition. The better steer weaners over 200 averaged from 365c to 430c and topped at 470c/kg lwt. Steer yearlings sold from $650 to $1560/head. Heifer weaners sold from $200 for young Shorthorns to $990 for well grown Hereford Angus cross heifers. The better heifer weaners averaged between 290c and 345c and topped at 359c/kg lwt.
The grown females in the sale were also cheaper. Two pens of Droughtmaster heifers PTIC sold for $1030 and $1160 while a few pens of Angus cows PTIC sold from $1590 to $1620/head. The best of the cows and calvers were a pen of British and European cross cows with large calves at foot. They sold for $1790 while the balance of the cows and calves sold from $750 to $1700/unit. A few pens of dry cows sold from $570 to $1580/head.
