Commentary
A return to a combined prime and store sale resulted in 3165 cattle penned which included 2260 prime cattle. Quality was mixed however the majority of the prime bullocks and cows were of good quality displaying plenty of weight and condition. All regular processors were in attendance and operating, supported by regular feeders and one live exporter. Cattle were drawn from most of the north and west including local and coastal areas.
Demand for most categories was solid and prices lifted in line with other selling centres and reflective of recent grid adjustments. Demand for lighter and younger cattle was mixed, with quality a factor that resulted in variable results. Yearling steers and heifers above 280kg to feed improved 28c to 45c, grown steers improved 13c to 27c, grown heifers increased 29c, bullocks lifted 28c to 50c and prime cows averaged 8c to 24c higher. Heavy bulls to processors eased 9c to 18c/kg.
Young crossbred steers to backgrounders sold to 372c and similar young heifers to processors averaged 260c/kg. Light yearling steers to restockers reached 264c to average 255c and steers above 280kg reached 310c to average 268c/kg. Steers to feed above 280kg made to an isolated 306c, most from 242c to 268c/kg. Good prime yearling steers sold to 308c/kg. Light yearling heifers to backgrounders made to 270c to average 261c, those above 280kg averaged 275c/kg. A large sample of good quality yearling heifers above 330kg to feed reached 300c, averaging 282c to 299c/kg. Heavy heifers above 400kg to the trade reached 298c to average 291c/kg.
Grown steers above 400kg to processors sold to 278c to average 264c, steers to live export averaged 273c/kg. Heavy grown steers above 500kg made to 306c averaging 300c/kg. Good quality heavy grown heifers to the trade sold to 294c to average 266c, secondary types averaged 248c/kg.
Heavy young bullocks to export slaughter topped at 308c, most sales from 292c to 304c, bullocks suitable for live export made to 306c to average 293c/kg. Medium weight 3 and 4 score cows sold to 274c, averaging 251c to 262c/kg. A good number of prime heavyweight cows topped at 302c to average 264c to 283c/kg. Heavy bulls to live export sold to 296c, processor bulls averaged 269c/kg.
