Commentary

Numbers eased by 283 for a yarding of 2188 cattle. Quality was mostly good throughout, comprising of nearly 900 cows in prime condition with good weight, supported by small mixed runs of bullocks and grown heifers, along with some very good lines of young cattle to suit restockers. The regular buyer panel included one live exporter and an additional processor and opportunity restockers. Cattle were drawn from Julia Ck and Winton to Georgetown, local and coastal areas.

Young cattle to restockers improved 12c to 60c, mainly quality related, while most prime categories have eased 7c to 20c, in line with other selling centres. Values for cows did improve as the sale progressed, particularly heavier, well finished pens.

Good quality vealer steers returning to the paddock sold from 360c to 398c/kg. Light yearling steers reached 394c, a good sample averaging 382c and those above 280kg averaged 359c/kg. Yearling steers above 330kg to backgrounders averaged 360c, selling to 372c, heavy steers above 400kg to feed made from 330c to 368c/kg. Restockers showed strong demand for good quality light yearling heifers, a good sample making from 308c to 338c/kg. Yearling heifers to the trade sold from 230c to 302c/kg. A limited number of heifers above 330kg to feed sold to 314c/kg. Prime grown steers above 400kg sold from 290c to 320c, heavy prime steers to the trade made from 306c to 322c/kg. Prime grown heifers to the trade mostly sold from 290c to 322c/kg.

A mixed sample of heavy bullocks to export slaughter topped at 316c, most sales 290c to 310c/kg. Medium weight 2 score cows averaged 240c, a large sample of 3 score cows reached 284c to average 262c to 272c/kg. Some excellent lines of prime heavyweight cows topped at 294c to average 281c to 289c/kg. Heavy bulls to processors reached 316c/kg.

A small number of cows and calves sold to $1,425 per unit.
