 Commentary

There was a reduced penning for the first of 2 short weeks. Young cattle were well supplied with a very good quality penning of weaners and vealers. Well finished grown cattle were in short supply while there was a good penning of cows. Overall the quality and condition of the offering was fair to good. There was increased restocker competition however there was one absentee in the heavy trade ranks.

Restocker competition for the very good quality penning of vealer steers was strong resulting in dearer trends through all weight classes. The improved quality contributed to strong price gains on the lighter weights with the heaviest weight range showing a moderate improvement. The heifers to restock sold to a slightly cheaper trend with the quality reducing the fall. The good quality medium and heavy weight yearling feeder steers sold to a dearer trend with heavy weights improving by as much as 13c/kg while isolated pens of medium weights experienced greater improvement. Prices eased for the secondary quality steers. Demand for yearling heifers to restock and feed again fell short of that for the steers with cheaper trends resulting.

Grown steers sold to dearer trends with the feeders over 400kg showing strong gains. Heavy weights to process also sold to dearer trends despite reduced competition on the younger lines. Strong demand from processors in the cow market resulted in dearer trends throughout. Restockers were again active on the better quality 2 score lines. Well finished heavy weights improved by as much as 13c/kg.
