Commentary

There were approximately 280 export and 70 young cattle penned representing a decrease of 2450 head week-on-week with supply impacted by the following holiday and recent price reductions. Most of the usual buying group was present and operating in a generally firm market. Quality declined with very few prime cattle on offer. A sprinkling of young cattle suited to the trade sold cheaper with quality an issue. There were no grown steers or bullocks. Manufacturing steers sold firm. Light restocking cows improved in quality and price while heavy beef cows sold firm. Heavy bulls sold firm.

Vealers sold from 235c to 310c/kg. Yearling trade steers made between 290c and 310c/kg. Yearling heifers to the trade sold between 246c and 330c/kg.

A pen of Friesian manufacturing steers made 244c with the crossbred portion from 218c to 280c/kg. Most light and medium weight cows sold from 125c to 210c/kg. Heavy weight cows made mostly between 170c and 250c/kg. Restocking cows sold between 55c and 200c/kg. Heavy bulls made from 212c to 262c/kg.
