Commentary

Lamb supply remained similar but quality stepped-up as agents yarded an impressive line-up of heavy hard-fed lambs weighing above 28kg cwt. The sale was significantly dearer than a week ago, with gains of $15 to $30 common and some grades up to $35 better. The strongest competition was on the neat lines of export lambs, and while the heavy trade and trade lambs were all dearer there was still some patchy bidding at times for lambs sized around 24-27kg cwt.

The heaviest crossbred lambs over 30kg cwt sold from $196 to a top of $240 and there was a consistent run of sales between $210 and $230 for a ballpark average of around 670c/kg cwt. There was a premium sale of $217 for a big line of 300 crossbred lambs estimated at 29-30kg cwt which helped boost the average for the 26-30kg category to 695c/kg cwt. General run of trade and heavy trade lambs $130 to $166/head at 630c to 680c/kg cwt, and there was a lot of Dorpers in this range. Heaviest Dorpers to $183. There wasn’t many decent lines of lightweight or store lambs in this yarding.

The sheep sale was dearer over an improved run of heavy sheep. Heavy crossbred ewes to $105 and Merino ewes to $108.80. General run of ewes $50 to $80/hd.
